ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR [SKYACTIV-G 2.0]

Outline

  • Two ECT sensors have been adopted for the engine control and PCM on-board diagnostic.

Two ECT sensors have been adopted for the system diagnosis of the engine cooling system by the engine control and PCM.

Purpose

  • Detects the engine coolant temperature as basic information for mainly determining the fuel injection amount.

Function

  • The detection accuracy of the following is improved by comparing each input signal from the ECT sensors positioned in the water outlet case and the lower radiator hose.

    • ECT sensor malfunction

    • Thermostat malfunction

ECT sensor characteristic

Construction

  • ECT sensor is located on the water outlet case and lower radiator hose.

  • A thermistor has been adopted for the detection part of the ECT sensor.

  • A thermistor is a resistor element in which changes in the electrical resistance is large against temperature change. Using this characteristic, the sensor detects the engine coolant temperature as a resistance value.

Operation

1. The ECT sensor detects (1) the engine coolant temperature.
2. The PCM detects (2) the engine coolant temperature by the voltage from the ECT sensor.

Fail-safe

ECT sensor No.1

DTC No.

Fail-safe function

P0117:00

  • Fixes the water temperature for the engine control at 40 °C {104 °F}, and for the idling air control at 80 °C {176 °F}.

  • Operates the cooling fan (high speed rotation).

  • Inhibits the fuel cut control during shift change.

P0118:00

  • Fixes the water temperature for the engine control at 40 °C {104 °F}, and for the idling air control at 80 °C {176 °F}.

  • Operates the cooling fan (high speed rotation).

  • Inhibits the fuel cut control during shift change.

ECT sensor No.2 (U.S.A. and CANADA)
  • Not applicable
