NO.1 POWER ASSIST DIFFERS BETWEEN RIGHT AND LEFT TURNS [ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS)]

Power assist differs between right and left turns.

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
  • Steering gear and linkage malfunction.

  • EPS control module malfunction.

  • Poor connection of EPS control module connector, terminal damage.

  • The steering wheel angle neutral position learning function has not been operated.

NOTE:

  • The steering angle learned by the EPS control module is cleared when 5 min. or more has elapsed after the battery negative terminal was disconnected.

Diagnostic procedure

STEP

INSPECTION

ACTION

  • Have DTCs been recorded in the memory?

    (See DTC INSPECTION [EPS CONTROL MODULE].)

Yes

Perform inspection using the appropriate DTC.

(See DTC TABLE [EPS CONTROL MODULE].)

No

Go to the next step.

  • Switch the ignition to off and maintain this condition 2 min. or more.

  • Switch the ignition ON (engine on).

  • Drive for 25 sec. or more in a straight line at more than 35 km/h {22 mph}.

  • Is there recurrence of malfunction?

Yes

Go to the next step.

No

Temporary error occurred while learning steering wheel angle neutral position.

There is not malfunction in the EPS system.

  • Inspect the connection of the EPS control module connector.

  • Disconnect the EPS control module connector.

  • Inspect both the EPS control module and wiring harness-side connector for poor connection (such as damage/pulled-out pins, corrosion).

  • Are all the pins normal?

Yes

Perform wheel alignment inspection.

(See WHEEL ALIGNMENT PRE-INSPECTION.)

(See FRONT WHEEL ALIGNMENT.)

(See REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT.)

No

If poor connection of EPS control module connector:

  • Securely connect the EPS control module connector.

If the EPS control module side connector is wrong:

  • Replace the EPS control module.

    (See ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

If the wiring harness-side connector is wrong:

  • Repair or replace the pins and/or the connector.

  • Recheck malfunction symptoms, then replace the steering gear and linkage.
