INTERMEDIATE SHAFT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. Rotate the steering wheel until the joint bolt on the steering column side and steering gear side reaches the removal position.

CAUTION:

  • Secure the steering wheel using tape or a cable to prevent the steering shaft from rotating after disconnecting the intermediate shaft. If the steering wheel rotates after the steering shaft and the steering gear and linkage are disconnected, the internal parts of the clock spring could be damaged.

2. Lock the tilt lever.

3. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
4. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Intermediate Shaft (Lower) Removal Note

1. Place alignment marks on the steering gear (pinion), clip, and intermediate shaft (lower) as shown in the figure.

2. Remove in the order of joint bolt A and joint bolt B.

3. Remove the intermediate shaft (lower).

Intermediate Shaft (Upper), Dust Cover Removal Note

1. Place alignment marks on the steering column, clip, and intermediate shaft (upper) as shown in the figure.

2. Remove the joint bolt C.
3. Remove the intermediate shaft (upper) and dust cover as a single unit.

Intermediate Shaft (Upper), Dust Cover Installation Note

1. Install the intermediate shaft (upper) with the alignment marks on the steering column and the clip, which were marked before removing the intermediate shaft (upper), aligned.

NOTE:

  • When replacing the intermediate shaft (upper) with a new one, place alignment marks on the new part in the same position as the removed intermediate shaft (upper).

2. Verify that the semicircular shape of the clip and U-shape groove of the steering column matches and joint bolt C can be inserted.

3. Install the joint bolt C.

Intermediate Shaft (Lower) Installation Note

1. Install the intermediate shaft (lower) to the intermediate shaft (upper).
2. Install the intermediate shaft (lower) with the alignment marks on the clip and steering gear (pinion), which were marked before removing the intermediate shaft (lower), aligned.

NOTE:

  • When replacing the intermediate shaft (lower) with a new one, place alignment marks on the new part in the same position as the removed intermediate shaft (lower).

3. Verify that the semicircular shape of the clip and U-shape groove of the steering gear (pinion) matches and joint bolt B can be inserted.

4. Install the joint bolt B.
5. Install the joint bolt A.

Nut Installation Note

1. Install the nuts with the arrow marks on the dust cover pointed to the upper side of the vehicle.
