FUEL GAUGE SENDER UNIT

Purpose

  • The fuel gauge sender unit detects the fuel amount in the fuel tank.

Functions

  • The fuel gauge sender unit outputs the fuel amount in the fuel tank to the BCM as a fuel gauge sender unit voltage signal.

Construction

  • The fuel gauge sender unit is positioned inside the fuel tank.

  • The fuel gauge sender unit consists of a float which moves up/down according to the fuel amount in the fuel tank and a variable resistor (sensor) which operates in conjunction with the up/down of the float.

Operation

1. When the fuel amount in the fuel tank increases, the float floating on the fuel surface moves up (1), and when the fuel amount in the fuel tank decreases, the float moves down (2).
2. Resistance in the sensor decreases (3) when the float moves up and resistance in the sensor increases (4) when the float moves down.
3. The BCM detects (5) the voltage value which varies according to the resistance in the sensor as the fuel gauge sender unit voltage signal.

Fail-safe

  • Not applicable
