REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER/HEATED OUTER MIRROR

Outline

  • The rear window defogger removes fogging from the rear window glass surface.

  • The heated outer mirrors remove fogging from the surface of outer mirror glass.

Function

  • Fogging on the glass surfaces of the rear window glass and the outer mirror glass is removed because the rear window glass and the outer mirror glass are heated by the rear window defogger and heated outer mirrors filaments, vaporizing moisture on the glass.

  • When the rear window defogger and the heated outer mirrors have operated for approx. 15 min, the power supply to the rear window defogger relay is stopped by the timer in the BCM and the operation of the rear window defogger and the heated outer mirrors is stopped.

NOTE:

  • When opening the convertible top, verify that the rear window defogger switch is off. Otherwise, the convertible top or interior material may be damaged by heat from the defogger.

Construction

Rear window defogger
  • The rear window defogger filaments are positioned on the cabin side of the rear window glass.

Heated outer mirror
  • The heated outer mirror filament is integrated in the outer mirror glass.

Operation

1. When the rear window defogger switch is turned on with the ignition switched ON (engine off or on), the climate control unit sends a rear window defogger/heated outer mirrors operation request signal to the instrument cluster (1) via CAN communication.
2. The instrument cluster sends the rear window defogger/heated outer mirrors operation signal to the BCM (2).
3. When the BCM receives the rear window defogger/heated outer mirrors operation signal, it turns the rear window defogger relay on (3). The rear window defogger timer operates at the same time the rear window defogger relay turns on.
4. When the rear window defogger relay is turned on, battery voltage is supplied to the rear window defogger/heated outer mirrors filaments (4), and the glass is warmed by the heat from the filament.

NOTE:

  • When approx. 15 min have elapsed after the rear window defogger timer/heated outer mirrors timer started operation, the BCM turns the rear window defogger relay off and stops the operation of the rear window defogger and the heated outer mirrors.
