DOOR LOCK DOES NOT OPERATE [SECURITY AND LOCKS]

Description

  • Door cannot be locked/unlocked using the door key cylinder.

  • Door cannot be locked/unlocked using the driver's door lock knob.

Possible Causes

  • Door latch switch malfunction

  • Door lock actuator malfunction

  • Open circuit in wiring harness between the following terminals:

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1E and door latch and lock actuator (RH) terminal E

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1B and door latch and lock actuator (LH) terminal G

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1C and door latch and lock actuator (RH) terminal K

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1C and door latch and lock actuator (LH) terminal A

Diagnostic Procedure

Step

Inspection

Action

1

INSPECT DOOR LATCH SWITCH STUCK OFF OR OPEN CIRCUIT
  • Open/close the doors one by one and verify that the door-ajar warning light in the instrument cluster turns on/off in conjunction with opening/closing of the door.

  • Does the door-ajar warning light turn on/off?

Yes

Go to Step 3.

(Door latch switch is normal)

No

Go to the next step.

2

    INSPECT DOOR LATCH SWITCH
  • Inspect the door latch switch on the door in which the door-ajar warning light did not turn on/off.

    (See DOOR LATCH SWITCH INSPECTION.)

  • Is the door latch switch normal?

Yes

Go to the next step.

No

Replace the door latch and lock actuator, then go to Step 6.

(See DOOR LATCH AND LOCK ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

3

DETERMINE IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE IS DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR
  • Perform the lock/unlock operation using the driver’s door lock knob.

  • Is the door lock/unlock for all doors switched normally?

Yes

System is normal.

No

Go to the next step.

4

INSPECT DOOR-RELATED WIRING HARNESS WITH MALFUNCTION (OPEN CIRCUIT)
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    (See NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION.)

  • Disconnect the door latch and lock actuator connector.

  • Disconnect the ESU connector.

  • Inspect for continuity between the electrical supply unit (ESU) for the door which could not lock/unlock and the door latch and lock actuator.

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1E and door latch and lock actuator (RH) terminal E

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1B and door latch and lock actuator (LH) terminal G

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1C and door latch and lock actuator (RH) terminal K

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1C and door latch and lock actuator (LH) terminal A

  • Is there continuity?

Yes

Go to the next step.

No

  • Refer to the wiring diagram and verify if there is a common connector between the following terminals.

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1E and door latch and lock actuator (RH) terminal E

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1B and door latch and lock actuator (LH) terminal G

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1C and door latch and lock actuator (RH) terminal K

    • Electrical supply unit (ESU) terminal 1C and door latch and lock actuator (LH) terminal A

      • If there is a common connector:
      • Inspect the common connector and terminals for corrosion, damage, or disconnection and the common wiring harnesses for an open circuit to determine the malfunctioning location.

      • Repair or replace the malfunctioning location.

If there is no common connector:
      • Repair or replace the wiring harness which has an open circuit.

  • Go to Step 6.

5

    INSPECT DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR
  • Inspect the door lock actuator.

    (See DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR INSPECTION.)

  • Is the door lock actuator normal?

Yes

Go to the next step.

No

Replace the door latch and lock actuator, then go to the next step.

(See DOOR LATCH AND LOCK ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION.)

6

VERIFY IF MALFUNCTION CAUSE WAS CORRECTED
  • Has the malfunction symptom been eliminated?

Yes

Troubleshooting completed.

(Explain the contents of the servicing to the customer.)

No

Verify the malfunction symptom in the symptom troubleshooting chart and perform the applicable other malfunction diagnosis.

(See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING ITEM TABLE [SECURITY AND LOCKS].)
